The Importance of Zone One Training
There are very few training studies that have looked at the physiological adaptations to zone one training. Most of the training studies which call themselves moderate and continuous are actually performed in zone two. The other argument you sometimes get is that if you do high intensity exercise you get less angiogenesis so you get less capilliarization when doing high intensity work. A lot of that work has been done from single leg exercise which is a completely different intensity spectrum to doing whole body exercise.
