The History of the Mechanical Pedometer

The first mechanical pedometer was created in the late 1700s by a Swiss watchmaker using the same mechanism he'd developed for a self-winding watch. Thomas Jefferson reportedly designed the pedometer and then commissioned it to be made by a watchmaker in Paris. The word mile comes from the Latin for 1000 paces, which is why we call a foot a foot.
