Socrates begins by cross examining agathon n order to establish a fewa basic premises for the argument he is about to make. He argues that if the goal is merely to offer praise of aros, this imposes a limit on the type of things that each man can say. And so socrates expresses here he doesn't think he can measure up to the tremendous speeches that have already been given. Says he cannot guarantee he will have a good speech if he's forced to continue in the style of eulogistic speaking.
