Uber was deeply unprofitable and lost a bunch of volume post-pandemic. Uber's mobility business, which was our cash cow, lost 85% of its volume overnight. The good times are when everyone feels great about what they're doing. That is not the time for you to be a cheerleader. At all. And on the other side, it's during the tough times that you've got to start being a cheerleaders.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi talks with Greylock general partner Reid Hoffman about his strategy for decision-making. Like most companies, Uber has experienced many ups and downs. Getting through each phase (good or bad), depends on how the leadership team responds, says Khosrowshahi. In difficult moments, which he refers to as "war time," it's critical to prioritize speed and quick decision-making. Conversely, during "peace time", he is more team-oriented and focused on incorporating as many viewpoints as possible.
