CHAPTER

Is There a Future That Doesn't Look That Bright?

The industry seems to be placing more emphasis on hiring people that already have skills rather than taking the time to develop that talent. And looking back at your work life, I did notice that about six months before you started at 8th Light, you stopped working as a volunteer domestic violence counselor and rape Crisis Counselor. So correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like you were making some serious decisions around that time of your life? "I do see a future that doesn't look that rosy in terms of what does design look like in 10 years time," she says.

I think you're right. Just coming back to what you're saying about the internships and the developing of junior talented is sad to see that the industry seems to be placing more emphasis on hiring people that already have skills rather than taking the time to develop that talent. And it's happening globally, I was talking with Jane Ostern who runs the experience practice at Digitas in the UK recently. I was talking with someone in New Zealand here, Ruth Brown, who is a senior UXer, and the same patterns are everywhere. I do see a future that doesn't look that rosy in terms of, well, what does design look like in 10 years time if we continue down this track and don't develop that talent? And just to come back to the topic of burnout, I think that's an hugely important thing to touch on and to try and get some more balance. And looking back at your work life, I did notice that about six months before you started at 8th Light, you stopped working as a volunteer domestic violence counselor and rape crisis counselor, educator and rape crisis counselor. And from the outside in, that seemed to me around that time, and this is just looking at a LinkedIn timeline, right? So correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like you were making some serious decisions around that time of your life and making some significant changes. I can't imagine what it's like being in an emergency room with someone who's just suffered sexual violence and being so close to paying in trauma like that was the nature of your work in that volunteer role, taking too much of a personal toll.

Yeah, well, it definitely was really intense, especially certain situations were more intense than others. And it was, I don't want to call it like difficult. It was a lot. It was like hugely, I think it's really important work and it's hugely impactful. Yeah, around that time was when I was like figuring out this career change. And before I did the boot camp that I've been talking about, I did do half of a different boot camp, a developer boot camp, before deciding that that just wasn't like, you know, doing writing back and code wasn't quite the path I wanted to take. So that was also a time when I was figuring out like making this huge career shift like I really loved my job at City or it also, it gave me a lot of like I had the mental space sort of to do this other work. And then when I started doing this boot camp, I was like, I didn't have the space anymore. So, it was sort of a thing if I don't have the capacity to do this the right way, then I shouldn't be doing it at all type of thing. So yeah, so I stopped and then I haven't gone back to it. And I think, you know, now I'm still very engaged in like sort of immersing myself in some really intense trauma that other people experience and trying to work on ways to improve it in a different sense. So I guess it's something I kind of go back to in different ways. Yeah.
