Cisco bought switching startup Crescendo when John Chambers was still a CO. The success of the first acquisition showed him the massive potential of Cisco's M&A strategy. As CEO, John would go on to acquire 180 more companies. Nearly all of the acquisitions were processed using a variation on that original playbook.
