Vincent: Taiwan is an interesting case study in a sense that it was only returned to the Republic of China in 1945 after the defeat of imperialist Japan. In 1949 the Kuomintang relocated their central government here to Taiwan and then he sent up an authoritarian dictatorship through martial law all the way into the 1980s following Taiwan's economic miracle. The DPP which is the party I belong to really came about through the process of democratization in the 80s and 90s there were a bunch of in freedom-minded lawyers professionals and urban folks and intellectuals who had advocated for stronger Taiwanese identity.
