The Different Types of Gastric Acid
There are cells that produce mucus which helps protect the inner lining of the stomach and also bicarbonate. That helps to neutralize the stomach acid when it's in contact with the very edge of the epithelial cells so that the stomach doesn't digest itself. There are other cells which produce gastric acid which helps maintain the very low pH environment, about a pH of two in the stomach. The purpose of that by the way is to help certain enzymes, particularly proteases which are enzymes that help chop up proteins.
