The Tension Effect

The tension effect is based on the fact that your body will nearly inhibit strength gains to prevent injury. In like the example of a bench press, very often we see people with improperly trained or just weaker stabilizer muscles. That Golgi tendon organ sends an inhibitory message to the brain to basically shut down a muscle. If it senses injury is going to occur to another muscle., you should be doing strict external rotations with a 40 pound dumbbell for 8 to 10 reps. The first time I benched over 400, 405 was when I was focusing on that stuff.
