I suspect singer might be correct that we're all failing horribly in our obligations to people in distant places. That's what I mean when I say this is a completely boring fact about me, that I'm failing all the time. This is a set of thoughts I've just recently been trying to work out in the last chapter of a book I wrote about. So it seems to me that there's this interaction between attitudes and emotions which are not subject to our immediate voluntary control,. but actions and emotions that sort of constitute our culture and our relationships. And that those two things don't march in step.
