In order to deal with trauma, you have to get very close to that trauma. One of the best ways to deal with traumas is to get very clear about the narrative around those traumas. Writing things down in a lot of detail does seem to have this quality of both reducing the emotional load and diminishing the frequency of those intrusive thoughts over time.
