Cognitive avoidance can include ruminating constantly worrying about what could happen, or running these crazy disaster scenarios over in your mind. Sometimes even daydreams can be a form of avoidance, like you were saying, dissociation. Yet, one thing that i think it's really helpful to appreciate is that very often worrying or ruminating serves the function of keeping fee s at bay. And therefore, the way out of is to become more able to tolerate those underlying feelings and longings and be able to hold them with mindfulness without being overwhelmed by them.
