The Death of Alcoholism
There's this idea that drugs dull our experience of reality. Alcohol definitely makes you numb in that way. But psychedelics seem to do precisely the opposite. It seems pretty widely attested in anthropological and archaeological research that indigenous peoples throughout the world are pretty good at finding the vegetable and fungal substances that will blow their minds. The general condition of alcoholism that pervades Europe or the Western world seems to me a really, really tragic replacement for what we might imagine was centuries before.
