Did They Know About the Defect?
There's no way to know without being in that seems little scary that they don't. They just put the same one back in. How would they know that it wasn't working? They wouldn't at this point. But they don't know what the proliam is. Chances you can speculate they probably did know about it, but there's no record of them ever talking about it. It's possible something was said during the take off brief which was not recorded by the cockpit voice recorder. If the captain had any doubts about the a d i, it's reasonable to assume that the point would have been re emphasized at some point before takeoff.
