How Do You Train for a 10K?

The only event you kind of move away from this philosophy would be marathon and maybe half, but certainly track middle and long distance. There's two different approaches I would have to 10K running: one is trying to run a time trial, run the fastest time, and one I'm getting ready for a championship race which takes into account it's going to be a fast less mile. Were there any key sessions that you always went to or used to sort of gauge when you were ready to go for like a race day?
