The Impact of Cardiac Arrest on Brain Function
The leading cause of death and disability amongst out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients is new hypoxic ischemic brain injury. For every one millimeter increase in arterial carbon dioxide tension, there is up to a 2% increase in cerebral blood flow. International guidelines currently recommend the targeting of normal capnea in patients resuscitated after out of hospital cardiac arrest.
