We're all shaped by two sets of variables, the extent to which we conform to an internal grid or sets of cultural norms. And once we realize that these two variables are working every culture, then we stop categorizing the world into us versus them individualists versus collectivists. All of this is pertinent to Japanese culture because its particular understanding of honor, shame and guilt,. I argue in the book are much closer to the Hebrew Bible's categories than a lot of mythologists recently have used.
