Introduction
Vision in vertebrates is possible thanks to a protein called Interfoto-Receptor Retinoid Binding Protein, or IRBP. tracing the evolutionary tree to find when IRBP first appeared in vertebrates revealed a surprising result. The most likely source of IRBP was acquisition of a bacterial gene by a vertebrate ancestor at least 500 million years ago.
