The Life and Times of Philip the Bold

From this first incident in 1392 until his death in 1404, Philip the Bold basically did whatever he wanted. The financial system Philip built in his own lands was underpinned by tax money he diverted from France. Although he maintained a firm grip on French government during Charles VI's increasingly frequent bouts of mental illness, Philip did have one important challenger. When Philip died in1404, Louis moved quickly to seize the reigns of power for himself and cut out the Burgundian faction. John the Fearless had every ounce of his father's limitless ambition and the same unscrupulous approach to racking up streams of income and lands.
