Y2K created or enhanced a lot of cynicism towards managerial efforts to institute larger scale information systems. Every step of the way there was active resistance against it and very little that managers could do about it. Here it is 12 years after Zuboff writes her book, we'd already built up a core that treats any mention of automation as a threat.
