War and starvation - Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict
The Real Story
The Ethiopian Government's War Against the Tigraya Peoples Liberation Front
The Ethiopian government's war against the Tigraya peoples liberation front is rooted in old grievances between political elites of ethnically based regions. Prime Minister Abi Ahmed's ascent to power in 2018 ended nearly three decades of dominance by the TPLF over Ethiopia's central government. Now soldiers from neighbouring Eritrea are also fighting in Tigray alongside the Ethiopian government forces, and all sides have been accused of atrocities. An important part of the peace plan is a promise of unhindered access for aid to reach a population now facing disease and famine.
