The Effects of Exercise on Weight Loss

Exercise does seem to increase the loss of fat mass while simultaneously reducing the proportion of lean mass being lost. The magnitude of reduction in lean mass loss varies by population and intervention. In general, this effect is more pronounced in untrained individuals. Even resistance training specifically has this unique effect. It seems to be more powerful than aerobic training. And it's also more pronounced in studies where there's unknown energy intake or protein intake.
