There are portable elements of the circle of trust approach. We teach participants in our retreats what those portable elements are after they've experienced them. People can work alongside each other for a year, three last, ten years, 15 years without knowing any more about each other's lives than when they walked in the door first place. Resilience is partly an individual deal, but it's also a communal deal. It's about supporting each other. And you support each other if you don't know squat about each otherd and so people get accustomed to telling simple life stories, non threatening life stories,. in brief form, in a way that builds community.
Have you ever had someone come to you with a dilemma, but when you start to share your advice, they resist your every suggestion? The relationship gets more strained. You leave feeling frustrated, but when you open up, you immediately get advice and feel more alone and more confused than you were before. For this episode, I continue the conversation I started in Episode 17 with one of my heroes, Parker J. Palmer. He's sharing a story or two, some of the things he has learned over decades, and some actionable advice. By the end of this episode, you will be better able to help people unravel their confusion and find the right way forward.
