The Deep Sea Mining Debate

The most important question in the deep sea mining debate is if you have a set of really strong regulations, how do you enforce them? The isolation of the mine site at the bottom of the ocean means that it's economically unfeasible for a regulator to do a spot inspection. You're going to rely on mining companies to submit their environmental monitoring data and for that data to be reviewed by an independent body. And so you're getting the data you need to answer the questions you've got about whether the impact is bigger or smaller than it was permitted to be.
