Dominance and Punishment

The Punisher may be primarily interested not in behavior but in being proved to be of higher status. Dominance hierarchies and dominance disputes are a fundamental characteristic of all social groups, from flocks of geese to human governments. Guilt and shame are forms of self-inflicted punishment. Many people do not experience guilt or shame in their daily lives because they respond to their own behaviour in alternative ways.
