Passing the Guard - Is There a Four Hundred Degree Angle?
One of the most important things when you're trying to pass someone's guard is to keep both their shoulders pinned on mat the way through. If you let your opponent get up on their side while you're passing, odds are you're not going to pass successfully. So that's where that far underhook comes in or that lapel punch. It is the pressure on their far shoulder that prevents them from getting up on to their side, which is key to a lot of guard passes.
