How to Disentangle the Financial Effects From the Ranking Effects

The key issue is in disentangling the rank effects from incentive effects. Empirically, the two usually go together. The way that the bonus is calculated is the following: ranking is divided into bands and everybody within the same band is going to get the same bonus. Your precise rank does not matter for the bonus you get. What matters is what band you're in. Now when the managers get their weak 11 feedback, they can see two things. They can see what rank they're getting together with everybody else, and they can also see which band they fall in.
