In a democracy, the society will go to great efforts to pursue what the majority want. I can very easily find lots of cases of Americans objecting to car domination in their cities. These street protests happened in suburbs, cities large and small, all over the country. And they were not arguing that cars are bad, they were arguing that we need to live in a society where people do not have to drive.
