Some recent guide lines have been more explicit in suggesting that higher intensity, interval type training may be a beneficial strategy. To go to your question, i think you need to be active, first of all, as much as possible. But if you really push me on the minimum, i would say, well, it can be as little as a minute a day - but that would be broken up into these short, hard bursts of 20 seconds at a time.
