The Root and the Trunk of the Tree of English
Some linguists think of english as a massive oak tree. The roots and trunk of the tree are the original germanic anglosaxan words. These are the core words of the language. While there are relatively few in number compared to the non germanic words which have been borrowed into english, they are the ones we use the most in day to day speech.
