The automatic thought is the in the moment reflexive mental reaction to an event it's what Freud would have described as the preconscious. A first thought may be a trigger for another automatic thought just like that gentleman before with the lateness to work. If you find yourself getting really down or self critical about yourself asking these questions might get to the root of the weed saying you know what I can't handle things and other people are going to leave me as a result.
