In the 12th century, philosophers working in France split over understanding of universals. Some thinkers believe that humanity is something real that exists in the world. Others found this impossible to accept and insisted that everything that really exists is something particular. Peter Abelard pioneered nominalism following ideas first put forward by his teacher Rosalind.
