Shame is the child's way of internalizing the badness that the parent has implied or said. So rather than being the bad boy who hit your sister, you internalize that bad person. Become a self-police officer, which creates the behavioral outcome that your parent wants. But when that energy arises in you, there's not enough subtlety to teach it away.
