This chapter sheds light on the lack of support systems in place for survivors of sexual assault, including the provision of replacement clothes after evidence collection. It explores the difficulties survivors face when sent home in paper slippers and surgical gowns, potentially causing suspicion from neighbors and hindering disclosure. Marty Goddard's efforts to change the way evidence is collected, including the creation of an evidence collection kit, are also discussed.

In the early 1970s, Marty Goddard was worried about the high rates of sexual assault in Chicago. She learned from police that evidence from sexual assault cases often wasn’t collected properly — or at all. “They said, ‘We don’t get evidence.’ And this really kicked everything off.”
