What Is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is characterized by the inability to completely digest the sugar found in dairy products. The inability to digest lactose is most often caused by a deficiency in the enzyme called lactase. Common symptoms include abdominal cramps, bloating, gas, rumbling in the lower abdomen, diarrhea, and nausea. Being lactose intolerant absolutely does not mean you have to eliminate all dairy from your diet.
