A lot of people when they are in crisis are feeling out of control and unsafe. So if you focus on your breathing, it's going to help you avoid starting to have an extreme stress reaction. Take the person's attention generally without touching them. Genuine compassion goes a long way but genuine compassion with acknowledgement of where they are is key.
