A good client will always have an answer to this question, but usually it'll take me some time to tease it out of them. You can end up with a short term win, but a long term loss if you just take their lead and don't ask questions. If I don't know what they want before I even start writing it, how am I supposed to? It would just be luck if I achieved it.
