The History of Demonstrative Pronouns in Languages With Long History
Historical linguistics shows that it's common for demonstratives to weaken into definite articles. Copula in some languages is transparently related to older forms of the demonstrative pronouns. Chinese has no agreement, but in the Coptic case you'd have to agree with gender. It doesn't really talk about some of the really many languages.
