The question at every point in everybody's training is simply, do I have the balls to load the bar and finish the fifth rep? No, not everybody has the balls. A lot of people who don't have the balls, give themselves permission to do light weights for high reps. And that's exactly what you did, isn't it? You know what I'm saying. The research is wrong. But if anything, if you're involved in a difficult, hard process, like getting stronger, getting bigger is probably not the right thing.
