The Institute for Fiscal Studies has predicted that we could end up spending £100 billion just in interest payments in the next financial year. That's more than the country spends on education. Have we always been borrowers as a country? The government has borrowed for centuries but not in the same way that it does these days. Since the Second World War, the types of things that government spends money on have expanded significantly.
