What's Underlying Understanding?
Si: Understanding must be earned by the learner. You can't just tell a student an understanding and they'll immediately apprehendit. The teacher has to assume, in part, a role of facilitating meaning making. We do that through essential questions, through posing problems, by playing devil's advocate,. By having kids ponder and try to work out solutions and meanings. In fact, think of the phrase, come to understand is not static. It's a process that occurs over time.
