Hypokalemia causes intracellular acidosis. Potassium shifts out of your cells and into the extracellular fluid. ammonia is the kidney's way of counteracting metabolic acidosis. Studies show patients with low normal potassium levels may do worse than those who are normal calemic or even slightly hyper-calemic.
