The sense of falling behind starts with something that I usually call the problem of escalating impossibility. This is best illustrated if you think about procrastinating before a test. We start to distract ourselves by maybe playing video games or watching TV, right? And then as that thought kind of crawls up in the back of your mind, you actually try to push it away. It can feel like that perfect score on the test is getting further and further away.
