Alcohol actually goes into both the GABA receptor and the adenosine receptor. Alcohol is a toxin, that's why we call it intoxicating. And when alcohol does it, it doesn't make you sleepy. So you end up whacked out. You like you wake up in the middle of the night and you can't go back to sleep. It's not so much blood sugar as GABA and adenosine.
