During REM sleep dreaming, your brain shuts down levels of two mono amines. One is called serotonin or fiveHT and the other is nor adrenaline. If we're making up for what sleep produces naturally, you relieve the burden on sleep. And so the homeostatic drive to sleep is reduced and therefore you don't need to sleep as much. That would be a stunning finding too.
