The Human Missile Crisis - Is There a Risk?
An invasion would have been pretty devastating and would likely have resulted in the use of nuclear weapons. Kennedy's military advisors called for airstrikes against Cuba's air defenses after a U2 surveillance plane was shot down. This was an unauthorized use of anti-aircraft weapons that could have triggered an invasion and could have triggered nuclear war. And so he continued to push for diplomacy.
