The company suffered 26 million dollars in losses due to the opeck oil crisis. Fred smith didn't have enough money to pay his pilots or fuel the planes. So he went to los vegas and gambled the money on the blackjack tables. He was good at black jack, and soon turned that five thousand dollars into 27 thousand dollars. The strategy for the first tv ad was to introduce the first new airline in 30 years, for packages only.
