Cognitive Load Theory

Cognitive load is a two word phrase we hear more than almost anything else from literature at the moment. John Sweller's theory says that working memory can only hold about two or four things in the mind at any one time. This limits its capacity to deal with complex information, so instruction should be massively sensitive to cognitive overload. We worry too much about having stuff on screen and not enough about focusing on our own brains.
