The Science of Psychotherapy

CHAPTER

Is There a Human Element in CBT?

The assumption is that we've inherited our fear centers from these animals, because they are less timid in that situation. And therefore, if we make animals less timid, giving the drug to a human should make the human less timid, but we know that the drugs are not really working so well. The obvious explanation is you can't find a problem by studying it in rats as that's not what you can study in physiology. You can use those drugs perhaps to better control behavior and physiology, but ultimately, it's got to be between the therapist and the patient kind of mano mano mana womano however you want to get that.
