The Polyvagal Theory of Stress

The Polyvagal Theory defines that there are three states of the nervous system. This is when we feel calm and engaged, we're connected. So if the body then detects some kind of change in its environment, it's like seeing a lion. And very quickly, we shift from parasympathetic nervous system into sympathetic nervous system activation. The stress response is a physiological response that occurs in response to perceived threat.
